How to Make Money from XM?

XM is not a get-rich-quick platform. It is a regulated forex and CFD broker that has been operating since 2009, now serving more than 15 million clients across 190 countries or more. There are several distinct ways to generate income through XM, and they suit different types of people.

Some require trading skill, some require an audience or network, and one simply requires you to follow someone else's trades. This post covers each method with the actual numbers attached, so you know what you are dealing with before committing time or capital.

Before diving in, if you are still evaluating whether XM is the right broker to use, our guides on is XM safe for investment and XM broker legit or scam cover the trust and regulatory picture in full.

Income Methods Available on XM

Method Who It Suits Earning Potential
Active Trading Traders with a tested strategy Unlimited, but high risk
Copy Trading Follower Beginners with limited experience Mirrors provider performance
Copy Trading Provider Experienced traders with a record $1 to $1,000/month per subscriber
Affiliate / Web IB Marketers, site owners Up to $25 per lot traded
Introducing Broker Those with a trader network Up to $25/lot + 10% on sub-IBs
Loyalty Program Active Standard / Micro clients Points redeemable for cash

Active Trading on XM

Trading is the core activity on XM. The platform gives access to over 1,000 instruments across six asset classes, and your profit or loss depends entirely on the positions you open and close.

There is no guaranteed return here, and a large proportion of retail accounts do lose money. To understand how the platform works before committing capital, our guide on how to use XM to trade walks through the full process step by step.

Forex

XM covers 50+ currency pairs, including majors, minors, exotics, and crosses. On the Ultra Low account, EUR/USD spreads average around 0.8 pips with no commission.

The Zero account drops spreads to 0.0 pips on majors but charges $3.50 per side per lot, bringing a full round-trip to $7 per lot. For traders executing high volume, the Zero account saves roughly $1 per round trip versus the Ultra Low account. For lower frequency traders, the difference is negligible.

XM executes 99.35% of orders in under one second with no requotes. The broker operates as a market maker, not an ECN, which means spreads can widen during major news events. EUR/USD spreads have been reported above 5 pips around NFP releases. Factor that into any news-trading approach.

Stock CFDs

Over 1,300 company shares are available as CFDs, covering the US, UK, France, and Germany. Commission on US stock CFDs is $0.04 per share with a $1 minimum per trade.

UK shares cost 0.10% per transaction, minimum $9. German shares are also 0.10%, minimum $5. These rates are competitive against most retail brokers. CFDs let you take both long and short positions, so falling prices are as tradeable as rising ones.

Commodities, Indices, and Crypto CFDs

Gold spot spreads start from 2.7 pips. S&P 500 spreads start from 0.4 points during regular session hours. Crypto CFDs cover 60 or more coins including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. Cryptocurrency leverage and availability vary by jurisdiction.

If you trade gold specifically, see our dedicated guide on XM for gold trading for a full breakdown of conditions, spreads, and strategy fit.

Quick Fact: XM's margin call triggers at 100% equity, and stop-out at 50%. That means when your equity drops to the margin required, you receive a margin call. If it falls further to 50% of margin, positions start closing automatically from the largest losing trade first. Negative balance protection applies across all accounts, so your balance cannot go below zero.

Copy Trading on XM

XM's copy trading feature works in two directions. You can follow other traders or become the one being followed. Each side has a different income profile. For a complete setup walkthrough, see our guide on start copy trading with XM.

As a Follower

You select a strategy provider, and your account mirrors their trades proportionally based on your balance and the risk level you configure. This suits anyone who wants market exposure without having to analyze and execute independently.

The key cost is the subscription fee, which the provider sets. Fees range from $1 to $1,000 per month. Some providers make their signals available at no charge.

Important Note: Past performance from any provider is not a guarantee of future results. A strategy that worked well during trending markets may fail in a different regime. Treat copy trading as one tool in a broader financial plan, not as passive income that runs itself.

As a Strategy Provider

If you have a consistent trading record, you can list yourself as a strategy provider on XM's copy trading platform and charge subscribers a monthly fee. The more subscribers you attract and the stronger your track record, the more you can realistically charge.

Providers set their own fee structure within the $1 to $1,000 range. There is no ceiling on how many subscribers you can take on.

XM Partner and Affiliate Program

XM's partner program is one of the more established in the industry. Over 250,000 partners currently operate under it. The structure accommodates two main types of participants.

Web Affiliate

If you own a website, blog, or social media channel with an audience interested in trading or financial topics, you can apply to the XM affiliate program. Each time someone clicks your tracked link, opens an account, and trades, you earn a commission.

The rate goes up to $25 per lot traded by your referred clients. You also earn 10% on commissions generated by any sub-affiliates you bring into the program.

Commissions are paid twice per week with no external fees deducted. The minimum payout threshold is $5. Payment methods include e-wallets, bank transfer, or cryptocurrency depending on your region.

XM provides tracking links, banner materials, and a dashboard showing real-time performance across all your referrals.

Introducing Broker (IB)

The Introducing Broker structure suits anyone who directly manages or has relationships with a network of traders. IBs earn up to $25 per lot on all trading activity from their referred clients, plus 10% on commissions from any sub-IBs they bring under their portfolio.

The earning is ongoing for as long as referred clients remain active and continue trading. XM places no upper cap on weekly commission totals.

Commissions are released twice weekly. Funds can be transferred freely between an IB account and a personal trading account, with no transfer fees in either direction.

Worth Knowing: The XM partner program offers CPA (cost per acquisition), revenue share on spread, and hybrid models. CPA rates can reach $1,000 per qualified client under specific arrangements. The standard per-lot rate of up to $25 applies to the revenue share model. If you have a large active client base, a custom arrangement through XM's account management team may yield better terms than the standard published rates.

XM Loyalty Program

Active traders on Standard and Micro accounts accumulate loyalty points based on their trading volume. Points are redeemable for cash, and the value per point increases as you reach higher milestone tiers.

This is not a major income stream on its own, but for consistent traders it represents a real cost offset over time. For more on the cashback side of this program, see our guide on the XM cashback program.

Important: Ultra Low and Zero account holders are not eligible for the Loyalty Program. If cashback through points matters to you, the Standard account is the right choice, even if its spreads are slightly wider than Ultra Low.

What Actually Determines Your Results?

Across every method listed above, a few factors consistently separate those who make money from those who do not.

Account Type and Trading Costs

Account type affects cost per trade directly. Running the Ultra Low account instead of Standard on 10 standard lots per month saves approximately $80 in spread costs on EUR/USD alone.

Over a year, that compounds into meaningful money. For a full breakdown of each option, see our guide on XM best account type.

Leverage: Risk Exposure, Not a Return Multiplier

Leverage size shapes risk exposure, not income potential. Traders who blow accounts early almost always cite excessive position sizing relative to their equity as the primary cause. The maximum available under offshore entities is 1:1000. That is not a target to aim for.

News Events and Spread Volatility

Trading around news events adds unpredictable spread costs. XM's market-maker model means spread control sits with XM during high-volatility windows. A $0.80 average spread pair can cost 5 pips or more during a major release.

Affiliate Success: Quality Over Quantity

For affiliates, client quality matters more than volume. A smaller number of active, high-frequency traders generates far more commission than a large base of dormant accounts. Client retention is the defining metric in the IB model.

Inactivity Fee: A Hidden Cost to Plan Around

The inactivity fee catches traders who step away without withdrawing. Accounts inactive for 12 months are charged $15 upfront, then $10 per month until the balance reaches zero. If you plan to pause trading, withdraw your balance first.

Summary

XM gives you the infrastructure. What you generate from it depends on the method you choose and how seriously you apply yourself to it.

Trading profits are real but variable. The majority of retail CFD accounts lose money, and XM is transparent about this through its regulatory disclosures. Consistent profitability takes time, discipline, and a method that has been properly tested before real capital is committed to it.

Our guide on forex risk management steps provides a framework that applies directly to active trading on XM.

The affiliate and IB program is a legitimate and structured income stream, particularly for anyone already in the financial content or education space.

The rates are competitive, payments are reliable, and the XM brand carries enough recognition in Asian markets that conversion rates tend to be higher than with lesser-known brokers.

Copy trading as a provider is the third credible path, but only for traders who already have a verifiable track record. Charging a monthly fee requires demonstrating real performance over time, not just a few weeks of demo results.

TopAsiaFX Note

XM's demo account runs with $100,000 in virtual funds and no time limit. Before committing capital to any trading method, use the demo to test your approach across different market conditions. Two to three months of consistent demo results gives you a much clearer picture than two weeks of lucky trades.
