In Forex, "1 pip" isn't a fixed monetary amount like "1 dollar" or "1 euro." Instead, it's the smallest unit of price movement for a currency pair. (Learn more about pip here)
The larger your trade size, the more each pip movement is worth. Common lot sizes are:
- Standard Lot: 100,000 units of the base currency.
- Mini Lot: 10,000 units of the base currency.
- Micro Lot: 1,000 units of the base currency.
The general formula of calculating Pip value is:
Pip Value = (One Pip in Decimal Form / Exchange Rate) x Lot Size
For currency pairs involving the Japanese Yen (JPY), it’s typically the second decimal. For instance, when USD/JPY moves from 145.67 to 145.68, it is also a 1 pip move.
Let’s see how much is 1 pip worth for every forex currency
Is 1 Pip Worth Anything?
Yes, the worth of 1 pip depends on your lot size and the currency pair you're trading.
Here’s a quick breakdown using the EUR/USD pair as an example:
| Lot Size | Units | 1 Pip Value in USD |
|---|---|---|
| Standard lot | 100,000 | $10 |
| Mini lot | 10,000 | $1 |
| Micro lot | 1,000 | $0.10 |
So if you're trading 0.01 lot (micro), a 50 pip move equals a $5 gain or loss.
And if your account is in INR or GBP, you'll need to convert this pip value to your base currency using the current exchange rate..
Forex Pip Values
Before jumping to the table, follow these notes:
- JPY Pairs: Pip values are calculated at the 2nd decimal place (0.01) instead of the 4th decimal place (0.0001)
- Variable Pip Values: For pairs where USD is not the quote currency, pip values will fluctuate with exchange rates. The values shown are approximate and based on current exchange rates.
- Calculation Formula: Pip Value = (Pip Size × Lot Size) / Exchange Rate (when quote currency ≠ account currency)

If You’re Curious About the Math
Here’s a simple formula to guide you in calculating the value of a pip:
- Pip Value = (Pip Size × Lot Size) / Exchange Rate (when quote currency ≠ account currency)
I'll explain the pip value calculation using EUR/USD as an example.
EXAMPLE: EUR/USD Standard Lot
Given:
- Currency Pair: EUR/USD
- Current Rate: 1.0500 (example)
- Lot Size: 100,000 EUR (standard lot)
- Pip Size: 0.0001 (4th decimal place)
Step-by-Step Calculation:
Step 1: Identify the Quote Currency
- Base Currency: EUR
- Quote Currency: USD
- Since USD is the quote currency, the pip value will be in USD
Step 2: Calculate Raw Pip Value
Pip Value = Lot Size × Pip Size Pip Value = 100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 USD
Step 3: No Conversion Needed
Since the quote currency is already USD, no further conversion is required.
Result: 1 pip = $10 for EUR/USD standard lot
Contrast with a Cross Pair Example: EUR/GBP
Given:
- Currency Pair: EUR/GBP
- Current EUR/GBP Rate: 0.8500
- Current GBP/USD Rate: 1.2500 (needed for conversion)
- Lot Size: 100,000 EUR
- Pip Size: 0.0001
Step 1: Calculate Raw Pip Value
Pip Value = 100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 GBP
Step 2: Convert to USD (if your account is in USD)
Pip Value in USD = 10 GBP × 1.2500 = $12.50
This is why cross pair pip values fluctuate - they depend on two exchange rates!
Japanese Yen Example: USD/JPY
Given:
- Currency Pair: USD/JPY
- Current Rate: 150.00
- Lot Size: 100,000 USD
- Pip Size: 0.01 (2nd decimal place for JPY pairs)
Step 1: Calculate Raw Pip Value
Pip Value = 100,000 × 0.01 = 1,000 JPY
Step 2: Convert to USD
Pip Value in USD = 1,000 JPY ÷ 150.00 = $6.67
But for simplicity, we show it as ¥1,000 in the table since that's the actual pip movement value.
Key Formula:
- USD Quote Pairs: Pip Value = Lot Size × 0.0001 (always results in USD)
- Non-USD Quote Pairs: Pip Value = (Lot Size × Pip Size) ÷ Exchange Rate
- JPY Pairs: Use 0.01 instead of 0.0001 for pip size
This is why EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, NZD/USD all have fixed $10 pip values for standard lots - the math is straightforward with USD as the quote currency.
Pipettes Are a Real Thing
A pipette is a fraction of a pip, specifically, 1/10 of a pip.
For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.10005 to 1.10015, that’s 1 pipette or 0.1 pip
Most brokers show pipettes as the 5th decimal (or 3rd in JPY pairs). It's mainly useful for scalpers or traders using price action scalping strategies.
Final Words
If you want to master forex– you must understand pip value. It is the foundation of everything:
From entry and exit points to risk-to-reward ratio, position size, and overall trading psychology
Regardless of the trading strategy you use, knowing how much is 1 pip helps you trade smarter.
